Rich’s musical versatility on woodwinds brings a wide spectrum of sound and styles to any musical event.
From jazz sax to swing clarinet or classical flute, Rich covers the bases with style and ease. He is a performing musician who can bring jazz history alive through sound.
Rich is a free lance musician working wherever work calls. He is currently the lead alto with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He has performed with many of the famous singers from the Great American Songbook Era including Mel Tormé, Tony Bennett, Nancy Wilson, Dakota Stanton, and Natalie Cole. He has also played with the Woody Herman All-Stars. Rich performs on pops concerts with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. He has been featured on their concert and recording of Too Hot to Handel and on a PBS tribute to Duke Ellington.
Originally from New Haven, CT, Rich attended the Navy School of Music and came to Colorado Springs to play with the NORAD Band in the late 1960s and early 70s. After his Navy service, he studied woodwinds at the University of Northern Colorado, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education.
Rich has two CDs both showcasing him on his doubles — alto, tenor, soprano sax, flute, and clarinet. Because I Love You is with a quartet and features jazz tunes. Rich Chiaraluce Live at Sherman’s Coffee House spotlights familiar swing tunes with guitarist Dale Bruning and bassist Ken Walker. He is also featured on several CDs with guitarist Dale Brunning as well as several local vocalists’ CDs including Joni Janek and Mary Ann Moore.
In addition to his music career Rich is an avid toy train collector. He has a large operating Lionel layout, a smaller operating American Flyer layout, and the famous "Beat the Train" layout in his basement. His wife, Ruth Ann, loves the music, the practicing and the trains!
